Media

According to the official data, on June 25, 2004 there were registered 20903 printed media including 3427 newspapers and 4073 magazines. 8859 periodicals have the all-Ukrainian status.

4084 printed media are issued in the Ukrainian language (taking into account local and regional periodicals); 2620 - in Russian; 3051 - in Ukrainian and other languages, 3333 - in Russian and other languages. Business circles are considered to be the leading prompters of the Ukrainian mass media.

The high competition didn’t help the media market to become highly profitable what could have provided the press independence from the major political players. As before, the Ukrainian mass media financially depend on different political and economic groups (“dnipropetrovskaya”, “donetskaya”, “kyivskaya”). They use mass media as a channel of political influence. Nevertheless, the diversity and the volume of the media market approve a high degree of information pluralism in Ukraine.
