Place of birth: Donetsk Region, Ukraine
Education: Graduated from Donetsk Polytechnic Institute and Ukrainian Academy of Foreign Trade. Holds LLM degree.
Career: Since 1969 - gas-fitter, fitter, machinist at the Enakiev metallurgical works.
Within twenty years occupied managerial positions: Director General of “Donbastransremont”, “Ukruglepromtrans” production associations and Donetsk territorial association of automobile transport.
Aug. 1996 – appointed Deputy Head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration.
Sep. 1996 – First Deputy Head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration.
May 14, 1997 – Nov. 2002 – Head of the Donetsk Regional State Administration; Deputy of the Donetsk Regional Soviet.
May 1999 – May 2001 – Head of the Donetsk Regional Soviet.
Nov. 21, 2002 – appointed Prime Minister of Ukraine.
Apr. 19, 2003 – elected Chairman of the Party of Regions of Ukraine.
Autumn - winter 2004 – ran for the President of Ukraine.
According to the Central Election Committee decision (which was later declared invalid by the Ukrainian Supreme Court), Yanukovych had won the presidential runoff and outrun his competitor Yushchenko by 3% of the vote. During the second runoff held on Dec. 26, 2004 Viktor Yanukovych took 44.2% of the vote, and his opponent Viktor Yushchenko 51.9%.
Dec. 31, 2004 – Yanukovych resigned from the post of Prime Minister.
March 26, 2006 - The Party of Regions won 32.1% of votes at the parliamentary elections.
August 4, 2006 - elected Prime-Minister of Ukraine (by the parliamentary majority).
December 18, 2007 - resigned from premiership.
January - February 2010 - ran for the President of Ukraine. Viktor Yanukovych received 48.95% of the vote in the second round of Ukraine's presidential election, 3.48% ahead of his opponent, Yulia Tymoshenko.
February 25, 2010 - was inaugurated as President of Ukraine.
Personal and political contacts: Yanukovych heads the Party of Regions of Ukraine that stands for interests of some Donetsk FPGs.
Marital status: Married, has two sons.
