Third President of Ukraine

Place of birth: village of Khoruzhivka, Sumy Region, Ukraine

Education: Graduated from Ternopil Financial and Economic Institute in 1975. Holds a Ph.D. in Economics.

Career: 1976 – 1985 – Economist, Head of the State Bank’s Ulyanivka branch.

1985 – Deputy Department Chief of the Ukrainian State Bank’s Office.

1992 – Deputy Chairman, First Vice-Chairman of Board of the joint stock Agro-Industrial Bank of Ukraine.

1993 - 1999 – Chairman of Board, President of the National Bank of Ukraine.

1999 - 2001 – Prime Minister of Ukraine.

2002 – January 2005 - People\'s Deputy of Ukraine, member of the Parliamentary Committee on human rights, national minorities and inter-ethnic relations, head of "Our Ukraine" parliamentary faction.

2003 – January 2005 - Chairman of Board of "Our Ukraine" all-Ukrainian public organization. Chairman of the Supervisory Board of "Ukraine 3000" International Foundation (Viktor Yushchenko\'s Foundation). Founder of the Vyacheslav Chornovil International Charitable Foundation.

Dec. 26, 2004 – won the presidential elections (the second runoff) with 51.9% of the vote. His opponent Yanukovych took 44.2% of the vote.

Nov. 29, 2008 - elected leader of the People's Union Our Ukraine Party.

Jan. 17, 2010 - participated in the presidential election, took 5.45% of the vote.

Political activity: In 2002 Yushchenko formed election bloc “Our Ukraine” that united about ten center-right party organizations. In the parliamentary elections of March 2002 bloc won 23.57% of the vote. Viktor Yushchenko led the opposition having become the head of “Our Ukraine” parliamentary faction, consisted of about 100 deputies.

Dec. 26, 2004 – Feb. 25, 2010 - President of Ukraine.

On November 29, 2008 Victor Yushchenko was formally elected leader of the People's Union Our Ukraine party.

Rating: According to the “Global Finance” magazine’s rating, in 1997 Yushchenko was one of the six world’s top bankers. After resignation from the post of Prime Minister in 2001, he held one of the highest ratings of popularity (22-25%) among the Ukrainian politicians. In 2008 his rating as a President of Ukraine was less than 5%.

Personal and political contacts: Connected with influential Ukrainian businessman Petro Poroshenko. Among other sponsors of Viktor Yushchenko’s election campaign mentioned: Yevhen Chervonenko (“Souz-Viktan” concern), Leonid Chernovetsky (“Praveks-Bank”), Konstantin Grigorishin (oil trader, Russian citizen).

Marital status: Married, has 5 children and 2 grandchildren. His present wife - Ekaterina Chumachenko – worked for the US State Department.
