KYRGYZ INTERIM LEADERS ACCUSED OF HELPING BAKIYEV TO ESCAPE
17:27 MSK

Leading members of the Kyrgyz interim government have been accused of accepting bribes to help the ousted leader and his family escape the country, the 24.kg news agency said on Wednesday.

The agency said it had received copies of bank documents including details of transfers from an Estonian bank to United Arab Emirates accounts supposedly belonging to interim premier Roza Otunbayeva and her first deputy Almazbek Atambayev.

According to the documents, Otunbayeva received $200,000 and Atambayev $150,000.

The people who provided the documents preferred to remain anonymous for "security reasons." They said they obtained the documents "by accident" and could provide the originals if necessary.

"We find it hard to assess the consequences of the revelation of this information. But we consider it our patriotic duty to provide you with the copies of the documents revealing the indecent deals of the interim government leaders," they told the agency.

Otunbayeva has dismissed the reports, calling them a "forgery" and a "cheap provocation."

The Kyrgyz interim government took power in the former Soviet republic in early April after anti-government protests in several cities turned violent, particularly in the capital, Bishkek.

Bakiyev fled to neighboring Kazakhstan on April 15 and then to the Belarusian capital of Minsk on April 20.
