Media

According to official returns, for September 1, 2003 in Russia there were registered 41080 printed media including 23700 newspapers, 14300 magazines and about 3000 anthologies, digests and bulletins. Federal press constitutes the third part of the all-Russian printed media that is equal to municipal press share – mainly, district and city newspapers while the regional printed media account for the rest part.

Experts point out that Russian magazine market is the least politicized. Its sale leaders are entertainment magazines with over 80% share in the total annual circulation. Political issues are in the focus of such magazines as “Kommersant-Vlast”, “Itogi”, and some others (their number is limited).

Analysis of the Russian media market shows that total revenues from sales and advertising do not provide for independent development of most Russian newspapers. So far printed media fail managing without support of different financial-industrial groups that owe many of periodicals.
