
Constitution
The Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan was adopted on November 6, 1994, by a national referendum that was held along with the presidential elections. Since then, November 6 is celebrated in Tajikistan as the Constitution Day.
In accordance with the Constitution, the Republic of Tajikistan is declared a sovereign, democratic, law-governed, secular, and unitary state. Besides, according to the Constitution, the government of Tajikistan shell provide social welfare and shell guarantee relevant living conditions and free development for everybody.
On September 26, 1999, the Tajik Constitution was amended by the referendum conducted on initiative of the Commission for National Reconciliation. The Constitution amendments set a 7-year presidency term for one person, and introduced bicameral parliament.
On June 22, 2003, another referendum adopted new amendments to the Constitution: two 7-year term of presidency for one person is permitted, and a human being, human rights and freedoms are recognized as superior values.
