Constitution
The Constitution of the Republic of Belarus was adopted on March 15, 1994 and amended by a nation-wide referendum on November 24, 1996. In fact, the amendments produced a new edition of the Constitution. Unlike the earlier version, the revised one significantly expanded the authorities of the President of Belarus and crucially changed the structure, functioning and composition principles of the legislative, executive and judicial powers.
Major constitution amendments are as follows:
- Bicameral Parliament is introduced;
- The President is vested with the right to issue decrees of special order;
- The Constitutional Court is deprived of the right to examine legal documents for compliance with the Constitution, national legislature and international treaties.
New version of the Constitution was declared invalid by the opposition political parties of Belarus.
