The Constitution

The supreme juridical power in the Republic of Armenia is vested in the Constitution.

The Constitution was adopted through the referendum July 5th, 1995.  The document had a number of serious drawbacks, though. Particularly, it delegated excessive authority to the President of the country, who was enabled to take control over the judicial power, as well as other governmental bodies. In course of long term work of the National Assembly in cooperation with European institutions and Venetian Commission in particular, a list of amendments had been drafted.

The package of amendments was adopted through the national referendum November 27, 2005.  The amended Constitution considerably limited the President's control of the Government, of the judicial branch and the National Assembly.  Besides, the ban for dual citizenship was as well lifted.
