Political Party System

There are about 100 political parties registered in Ukraine. Most of them are the phantom-parties. Only 20 political parties wield influence upon politics.

An increase in number of parties is stimulated by the national legislation, which provides political parties with the considerable rights in the course of elections. Another factor which promotes party organization is the institutional design of Ukraine: the role of the Parliament in the policy making process is comparable with the role of the President.

In future it is expected an increase of influence of these factors upon the party system structuring, as the parliamentary elections will be held on a proportional basis with a rather low electoral barrier (3 %). Local elections are proposed to be held on a proportional basis too.

Viktor Yushchenko, the President of Ukraine was elected the honorary chairman of the party.
