Place of birth: Zhytomyr Region, Ukraine
Education: In 1978 graduated from History Department at Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University. Holds a Ph.D. in History.
Career: 1978 - 1986 - Assistant to the Rector, Associate Professor at History Department.
1986 - 1989 – Director of Department of the Ministry for Higher and Specialized Secondary Education of the Ukrainian SSR.
1989 - 1991 – lecturer, History Department, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University; aide to the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
1991 - 1994 - Associate Professor and doctoral student, History Department, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University.
Aug. 1994 – Assistant to the President of Ukraine, Professor, Modern History Chair, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University.
Nov. 1995 – Sep. 1996 – Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of Ukraine.
March 1996 – Member of the Council for Science and Scientific-and-Technical Policy under the President of Ukraine.
Sep. 1996 - Nov. 1999 – First Assistant to the President of Ukraine, Leader of the Assistant and Referent Group to the President of Ukraine.

May 28, 2002 – elected Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
June 2004 – elected Chairman of the People’s Agrarian Party of Ukraine.
March 2006 – after the Parliamentary elections, he resigned from the Chairmanship of the Verkhovna Rada and lost his mandate.
May 5-6 2006 – elected Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
2007 - became a MP once again.
December 9, 2008 - elected Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
Awards: Honored Scientist and Technician of Ukraine (1998).
State Science and Technology Award Laureate (1999).
